It is estimated that we ‘talk’ with our inner voice (or our internal thinking) about 150 to 300 words per minute. That’s about 40.000 to 60.000 thoughts a day!

Not all this self-talk is negative. We can use this self talk to instruct (‘I need to turn right here’) or to motivate (‘I can do it’) ourselves.

But according to behavioural psychologists 77% of our self-talk we can label negative. This is either plain negative (‘I’m no good’) or more subtle (‘I look awful in this shirt!’), but no less damaging on the long run.

All this negative self talk has an impact on our self esteem. This goal is not about eliminating all negative self talk, but to be more aware of it. It also gives guidelines for a more productive and meaningful self talk.

Thus it is recommended to review this goal weekly, or even daily as you learn to shift your Negative self talk!
